Premier League Midweek Drama: Wolves Stun Liverpool, Everton Cruise, Sunderland Snatch Win at Leeds

Premier League delivered a mix of frustration, clinical finishing, and a late twist that left fans buzzing. Four matches took center stage, producing contrasting outcomes that shifted the landscape at both ends of the table, from survival scraps to European qualification pushes.

The evening's headline came from Molineux, where bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers pulled off a stunning 2-1 victory over high-flying Liverpool. Arne Slot's side dominated large spells but failed to capitalize, allowing Wolves to strike twice late including a decisive injury-time winner to claim a precious three points. The result handed Liverpool a major setback in their chase for Champions League qualification, while giving the hosts only their third league win of the campaign and breathing new life into their relegation battle. Rodrigo Gomes opened the scoring for Wolves before the dramatic finale sealed the upset against a frustrated Reds outfit.

Everton produced a professional performance at home against Burnley, securing a comfortable 2-0 win that edged them closer to European contention. James Tarkowski rose highest to head the Toffees in front in the first half, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall added a sumptuous chipped finish after the break to double the advantage. It marked back-to-back victories for Everton, their first home win since December, with improving form under the current regime and putting pressure on those around them in the top-half race.

At Elland Road, Sunderland claimed a gritty 1-0 triumph over Leeds United, ending a run of winless league games and handing the hosts a blow in their fight to stay up. The decisive moment arrived in the 70th minute when Habib Diarra converted from the penalty spot following a handball decision against Ethan Ampadu. Despite Leeds pushing hard for an equalizer, the Black Cats held firm for their first away win in the Premier League this season, lifting spirits in the north east while leaving Leeds six points clear of the drop zone but vulnerable.

The Vitality Stadium saw Bournemouth and Brentford share a goalless stalemate in a match that promised more than it delivered. The Cherries created numerous opportunities but lacked the finishing touch, with Ryan Christie coming agonizingly close on several occasions. Brentford defended resolutely and frustrated their hosts throughout, securing a valuable point that keeps both sides ticking over in mid-table without major momentum shifts.

These results reflect the Premier League's relentless competitiveness this season. Wolves' heroics against Liverpool shows that no fixture is a foregone conclusion, especially when survival is on the line. Everton's clean-sheet success strengthens their credentials for a potential top-six finish, while Sunderland's disciplined display shows why they remain dangerous despite inconsistent form. Bournemouth and Brentford's draw, meanwhile, highlights the fine margins that often define points in the middle of the pack.

With the season entering its crucial and decisive moment, every result matters. Liverpool dropped points in their pursuit of silverware, Leeds face an uphill task to pull away from danger, and the underdogs Wolves and Sunderland proved once again that they still have the fire power that can turn games on their head. Every fans attention turns to the remaining fixtures, including Aston Villa versus Chelsea on Wednesday, the race for positions across the division intensifies further. Fans can expect more twists in what has already been an unpredictable campaign.

Dramatic Night in European Football: Upsets and Dominant Wins in Champions League Playoffs and Championship Action

In a thrilling evening of European football, the UEFA Champions League knockout playoff second legs delivered plenty of excitement, shocks, and standout performances. Meanwhile, back in England, the Championship produced a mix of high-scoring thrillers, crucial points, and surprise results that kept the promotion race wide open.

The biggest surprise came from the Champions League at the San Siro, where Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt pulled off a stunning upset by defeating Inter Milan 2-1 in the second leg, advancing 5-2 on aggregate. The Norwegian champions, who had already taken a commanding 3-1 lead from the first leg, showed remarkable composure and tactical discipline to hold off a desperate Inter comeback attempt. This result marks a historic milestone for Bodø/Glimt, propelling them into the round of 16 for the first time in their history and sending last season's finalists crashing out early.

Atlético Madrid, on the other hand, made light work of their tie against Club Brugge. After a high-scoring 3-3 draw in the first leg in Belgium, Diego Simeone's side cruised to a 4-1 victory at the Metropolitano, sealing a 7-4 aggregate triumph. Norwegian striker Alexander Sørloth was the star of the show, netting a brilliant hat-trick with clinical finishes that showcased his growing importance to the team. USMNT midfielder Johnny Cardoso also got on the scoresheet with a memorable strike, underlining Atlético's attacking depth as they booked their spot in the last 16.

Bayer Leverkusen secured a more straightforward progression, holding Olympiacos to a 0-0 draw at home to win 2-0 on aggregate. The German champions, known for their attacking flair under their manager, managed the game professionally despite some late pressure from the Greek side, ensuring they advanced without drama.

Newcastle United rounded off the evening's action with a comfortable 3-2 win over Qarabag at St. James' Park, completing a dominant 9-3 aggregate victory. The Premier League side never looked in serious danger, treating the tie as a chance to build momentum heading into the knockout stages.

Shifting focus to England's Championship, an entertaining midweek round of fixtures saw goals aplenty and significant implications for the table. Southampton delivered a statement performance, hammering QPR 5-0 at St. Mary's in a ruthless display that highlighted their promotion credentials. The Saints' attacking players ran riot, with standout contributions helping them strengthen their push for automatic promotion.

Ipswich Town kept up their strong form with a solid 2-0 away win at Watford, closing the gap on those above them and maintaining pressure in the top spots. Hull City thrilled their home fans with a 4-2 victory over Derby County, featuring second-half goals that secured three vital points and consolidated their play-off position.

Wrexham continued their impressive campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 home win against Portsmouth, thanks to late drama that delighted the home crowd. Blackburn Rovers suffered a setback under their management, falling 2-1 to Bristol City in a competitive encounter at Ewood Park.

Other results included a 1-1 draw between Middlesbrough and Leicester City, where both sides shared the spoils in a tightly contested clash. Swansea City grabbed a late equalizer to draw 1-1 with Preston North End, while West Bromwich Albion were held 1-1 by Charlton Athletic in a match that had implications at both ends of the table.

Tuesday night's action across Europe reminded fans why these competitions captivate audiences worldwide from giant-killing heroics in the Champions League to goal-filled drama in England's second tier. As the knockout draw approaches and league tables tighten, the road ahead promises even more intensity and unforgettable moments.

Girona Stuns Barcelona 2-1 in Catalan Derby Thriller

Girona pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat FC Barcelona 2-1 at Estadi Montilivi on Monday evening, February 16, 2026, in a gripping La Liga encounter. The result left Barcelona ruing missed opportunities and handed Real Madrid a two-point cushion at the summit of the standings.

The visitors controlled much of the first half, peppering Girona's goal with chances. Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal was particularly unfortunate—he spurned two close-range efforts before stepping up for a penalty right on the stroke of halftime. His powerful spot-kick cannoned off the post, keeping the score level at the break despite Barcelona's dominance.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 59th minute when center-back Pau Cubarsí connected perfectly with Jules Koundé's inviting cross, directing a powerful header into the net to give Barça the lead.

Girona refused to wilt. Within minutes, Thomas Lemar leveled the scores in the 61st minute, finishing clinically from close range after sharp build-up play carved open the Barcelona defense.

The hosts completed the turnaround in the 86th minute. Substitute Fran Beltrán latched onto Joel Roca's pass and slotted home calmly from the heart of the box, igniting wild celebrations among the home fans. Barcelona pushed desperately for an equalizer in stoppage time, but a late Robert Lewandowski effort was flagged offside, and Girona held firm—though they finished with 10 men after Roca received a red card deep into added time for a challenge on Yamal.

The defeat marked Barcelona's second consecutive loss across competitions, exposing vulnerabilities in finishing and late-game concentration under manager Hansi Flick. Despite superior possession and shot creation, the Blaugrana couldn't capitalize, allowing Girona—a side that had struggled earlier in the campaign—to claim a vital three points.

This outcome keeps the title race razor-sharp after Matchday 24. Real Madrid sit atop the table, while Barcelona remain strong contenders but now face added pressure to respond quickly.

Here's the updated top of the La Liga standings:

| 1 | Real Madrid | 24 | 19 | 3 | 2 | 53 | 19 | +34 | 60 |

| 2 | Barcelona | 24 | 19 | 1 | 4 | 64 | 25 | +39 | 58 |

| 3 | Villarreal | 23 | 14 | 3 | 6 | 44 | 26 | +18 | 45 |

Girona climbed to 12th place with the win, moving onto 29 points and gaining breathing room from the drop zone.

Manchester City 2-1 Liverpool: A Heart-Stopping Anfield Thriller

The cauldron of Anfield boiled with tension from the first whistle, as two titans of the Premier League clashed in a match that felt like destiny itself hung in the balance. For long stretches, the game was a cagey, nerve-shredding chess match—Manchester City dominating possession but finding Liverpool's resolute defense an impenetrable wall, while the Reds waited like coiled springs for their moment.

Then, in the 74th minute, the stadium erupted. Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up to a free-kick from 30 yards out, and with a wicked, curling strike that kissed the post on its way in, he sent the Kop into ecstasy. Liverpool 1-0 up. The title race seemed to tilt. City looked rattled, time slipping away, the weight of Anfield's history pressing down. Every tackle, every clearance felt like it could decide everything. Hearts pounded louder than the drums in the stands.

But this City side refuses to die quietly. In the 84th minute, the momentum shifted in a heartbeat. Erling Haaland flicked the ball cleverly, and Bernardo Silva pounced—slotting home the equalizer with ice in his veins. 1-1. The away end exploded; Anfield fell into stunned silence. Was this the spark?

The final minutes became pure chaos, a breathless crescendo of drama. Liverpool pushed for a winner, but the game turned on a knife-edge. Deep into stoppage time, contact in the box—Alisson brought down Matheus Nunes. Penalty. The stadium held its collective breath. Haaland stepped up, cool amid the roaring hostility, and buried it low past the diving keeper.  ''2-1 Manchester City.''

The whistle blew amid pandemonium—jubilation for the visitors, agony for the home faithful. A dramatic, late, gut-wrenching comeback that keeps City's title dreams flickering. Anfield had witnessed another chapter in its legendary rivalry, one that will be replayed for years: tension, heartbreak, and glory snatched in the dying embers.

Manchester United Edge Tottenham 2-0 in Tense Old Trafford Showdown

Manchester United kept their revival under interim boss Michael Carrick firmly on track with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday. Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes sealed the win, but the match was far from straightforward, with plenty of suspense keeping fans on edge until the final whistle.

The game turned dramatically in the 29th minute when Tottenham captain Cristian Romero received a straight red card for a reckless challenge on Casemiro. Referee Michael Oliver had little hesitation in reaching for the card, leaving Spurs down to 10 men and facing an uphill battle. Romero's dismissal came just days after his outspoken social media comments, adding extra sting to Tottenham's woes.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Tottenham showed resilience in the first half. Guglielmo Vicario pulled off several sharp saves to keep the score level, while United pushed hard for an opener. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 38th minute through a clever set-piece routine. Bruno Fernandes played a short corner to Kobbie Mainoo, whose no-look flick found Mbeumo in space at the edge of the box. The forward calmly slotted home his ninth Premier League goal of the season, sending the home crowd into raptures just before the break.

The second half brought more tension. With a man down, Tottenham dug in deep, frustrating United's attacks and limiting clear chances. Xavi Simons nearly sparked hope with a shot that flashed narrowly wide early on, but Spurs rarely threatened Andre Onana's goal. United dominated possession yet struggled to find the killer second, creating a nail-biting atmosphere as the minutes ticked by.

The relief came in the 81st minute when Fernandes finally doubled the lead. A cross into the box drew defenders to Harry Maguire's header, but the ball fell perfectly for the Portuguese captain to poke it past Vicario at the back post. It was a moment of class from the influential playmaker, who earlier set up the first goal and created numerous chances throughout.

The late strike eased the nerves around Old Trafford, securing United's fourth consecutive Premier League win since Carrick took charge following Ruben Amorim's departure. Tottenham, meanwhile, slipped further into trouble, extending their winless run and highlighting ongoing struggles under pressure.

Carrick's side now sit comfortably in the top four, while Spurs languish lower down the table. The result was never in serious doubt after the red card, but the drawn-out wait for a second goal ensured the match delivered real drama right to the end.

Senegal Crowned African Champions After Dramatic Final Chaos in Rabat

Senegal lifted the Africa Cup of Nations trophy for the second time in their history, defeating hosts Morocco 1-0 after extra time in Sunday's final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium. The match seemed destined for penalties until chaos erupted in stoppage time.

A late VAR-awarded penalty to Morocco — following a contentious pull on Brahim Diaz — prompted Senegal's players to briefly walk off the pitch in protest, led by coach Pape Bouna Thiaw. After a tense delay of around 14 minutes, talisman Sadio Mane played a pivotal role in convincing his teammates to return.

Diaz then stepped up and attempted a Panenka, only for goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to calmly save it, keeping the scores level at 0-0.The drama continued into extra time, where Pape Gueye delivered a stunning rocket in the 94th minute, firing past the Moroccan defense to seal the victory and spark wild celebrations among the Teranga Lions supporters.

This triumph marks Senegal's second AFCON title since their breakthrough win in 2021, cementing their status as one of Africa's dominant forces this decade. Mane, who has hinted this might be his final tournament appearance, once again proved his leadership both on and off the pitch, while Mendy's heroics and Gueye's decisive strike will be etched in the memories of fans.

Morocco, despite the home advantage and their quest to end a 50-year wait for continental glory, were left heartbroken. Coach Walid Regragui expressed disappointment, calling the events "shameful," though he congratulated the winners.

The final will long be remembered not just for the result, but for the extraordinary scenes that tested the spirit of African football. Senegal's resilience prevailed, delivering a memorable chapter in the tournament's storied history.

Bruno Fernandes is set to miss out on action for Manchester United with an injury

Bruno Fernandes is set to miss out on action for Manchester United with an injury.

Manchester United have been dealt a major blow with captain Bruno Fernandes facing a spell on the sidelines after picking up a soft tissue injury during their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

The Portuguese midfielder, who has been a near-ever-present figure for the Red Devils since joining in 2020, pulled up late in the first half at Villa Park, clutching his hamstring. He battled on until halftime but was substituted at the break, with Lisandro Martinez coming on in his place.

Head coach Ruben Amorim confirmed the setback post-match, describing it as a soft tissue issue that will keep Fernandes out for "a while." While the exact timeline remains unclear pending further assessments, reports suggest he could miss at least a month, potentially ruling him out until mid-January. That would see him absent for key fixtures, including the Boxing Day clash with Newcastle United at Old Trafford, as well as games against Wolves and others in the busy festive period.Amorim has called Fernandes "impossible to replace," highlighting his crucial role in creativity, leadership, and organization.

Teammate Diogo Dalot echoed that sentiment, labeling the injury a "massive" loss, especially given Fernandes' remarkable durability—he's only missed a handful of games due to injury in his United career. The timing couldn't be worse for United, who are already without Kobbie Mainoo (calf problem) and several players at the Africa Cup of Nations, including Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo.

Amorim is urging the squad to step up, naming players like Martinez and Luke Shaw as potential leaders in Fernandes' absence.

Anthony Joshua Set to Lose £32m Prize Money After Knocking Out Jake Paul in Blockbuster Clash

Former two-time heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua is reportedly facing the loss of a staggering £32 million in prize money following his knockout victory over social media star-turned-boxer Jake Paul. The much-hyped crossover bout, which attracted global attention and massive pay-per-view sales, ended dramatically when Joshua stopped Paul in emphatic fashion, silencing critics who doubted the legitimacy of the contest.

However, sources close to the promotion revealed that the financial fallout began shortly after the fight. According to reports, clauses in the fight contract allegedly restricted the manner in which Joshua was expected to approach the bout, with provisions aimed at ensuring competitiveness and entertainment value rather than a one-sided finish. Joshua’s explosive knockout, while celebrated by fans, is said to have triggered penalty clauses that could see him forfeit his agreed £32 million purse.

Insiders claim the dispute centers on alleged breaches of promotional agreements, including expectations around fight duration and conduct. While Joshua’s camp maintains that he fought strictly within the rules and as a professional athlete should, legal teams on both sides are now reportedly reviewing the contract.

Jake Paul, who suffered his first stoppage loss against an elite heavyweight, has yet to publicly comment on the financial controversy. Meanwhile, boxing analysts say the situation highlights the growing tension between traditional boxing values and entertainment-driven crossover fights. As negotiations continue, the outcome could set a major precedent for future celebrity boxing events.

That United Fan Could Have Had Two Haircuts

Aston Villa mocked viral Manchester United fan 'The United Strand' after beating the Red Devils 2-1 and extending their winning run to 10 games across all competitions. The viral sensation, whose real name is Frank Ilett, has vowed not to cut his hair until United win five matches in a row. The closest Ruben Amorim's side have come to that feat since his appointment was three games, a run which ended in November.

They took to their verified social media X account to make the post.

The comment, shared across social media, was accompanied by celebratory images that captured Villa’s confidence and swagger after the result. Fans of the Birmingham club lapped it up, praising not just the team’s performance on the pitch but also the club’s bold online presence. For United supporters, however, the joke cut deep, reflecting ongoing frustrations over inconsistency, defensive lapses and a lack of clear identity.

Villa’s display underlined their growing reputation as one of the league’s most organised and fearless sides, capable of outplaying traditional heavyweights both tactically and mentally. While Manchester United continue to search for stability and answers, Aston Villa are clearly enjoying the moment — and they are not shy about letting their rivals know it.

Morocco Defeat Comoros 2-0 in AFCON opening

Morocco opened the Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-0 victory over Comoros on a raucous night at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Brahim Diaz and Ayoub El Kaabi were on the scoresheet on a trickier evening than the Atlas Eagles had hoped for, but the hosts got the job done in front of their home fans.

Morocco’s breakthrough came in the first half after sustained pressure finally paid off, with a well-worked attacking move resulting in the opening goal. The North African giants continued to dictate play in midfield, using quick passing and intelligent movement to stretch Comoros’ defense. Despite spirited defending and occasional counter-attacks from Comoros, Morocco remained solid at the back and limited their opponents’ chances.

In the second half, Morocco sealed the victory with a second goal, calmly converting another clear opportunity to put the result beyond doubt. The win boosts Morocco’s confidence as they continue their campaign in the Afcon.

Roy Keane Slams Manchester United Players, Says “Too Many Just Don’t Do Enough

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has launched a scathing assessment of the club’s current squad, claiming that too many players are failing to put in the level of effort required to succeed at the highest level. Speaking during a recent punditry appearance, the former United captain questioned the commitment, consistency and mentality of several players, arguing that talent alone is no longer enough in modern football.

Keane expressed frustration at what he described as a lack of intensity and responsibility within the team, particularly during difficult moments in matches. According to him, elite clubs demand players who are willing to fight for every ball, take criticism, and respond positively to setbacks — qualities he believes are missing in parts of the current squad.

The outspoken pundit also suggested that repeated poor performances point to deeper issues within the dressing room culture, warning that rebuilding Manchester United will require tough decisions and higher standards. Keane’s comments have sparked debate among fans and analysts, with many agreeing that effort and accountability must improve if the club is to return to challenging for major honours.

FIFA slashes price of some 2026 World Cup tickets after global fan backlash

FIFA announced on Tuesday that $60 tickets will be made available for every game at the tournament in North America, to be distributed to the national federations whose teams are participating. Those federations decide how to distribute them to loyal fans who have attended previous games at home and on the road.

The number of $60 tickets for each game is likely to be in the hundreds, rather than thousands, in what FIFA is now calling a “Supporter Entry Tier” price category.

FIFA did not specify exactly why it so dramatically changed strategy, but said the lower prices are “designed to further support travelling fans following their national teams across the tournament.

The World Cup in North America will be the first edition that features 48 teams, up from 32, and is expected to earn FIFA at least $10 billion in revenue. But fans worldwide reacted with shock and anger last week on seeing FIFA’s ticketing plans that gave participating teams no tickets in the lowest-priced category.

The cheapest prices ranged from $120 to $265 for group-stage games that did not involve co-hosts, the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The development comes following talks with member associations, which included the FA and German federation.

A FIFA spokesperson said: 'Fans of the national teams that have qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2026™ will benefit from a dedicated ticket pricing tier, which has been designed to make following their teams on football’s greatest stage more affordable.

Burn suffers broken rib and punctured lung

Burn, 33, was injured in  challenge with Sunderland right-back Nordi Mukiele during the first half as Newcastle lost 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Mukiele was booked after his knee crashed into Burn's side as both players slid in to win the ball.

Although Burn tried to carry on, following some initial treatment, he was replaced by Fabian Schar a few minutes later.

Head coach Eddie Howe later revealed the centre-back was taken to hospital after he "struggled to breathe" at half-time.

A punctured lung occurs when air leaks into the space between the lung and chest wall. This causes the lung to collapse.

Howe is set to provide a more detailed prognosis at his news conference on Tuesday - but Burn looks set to miss a host of games over the festive period and into the new year.

"We're stretched in our backline," Howe said on Sunday. "We have got a number of injuries and that is alarming for us. It's not a perfect field for us currently. We're battling a few situations.

Pep Guardiola's wife 'moves out of family home

Pep Guardiola's wife has reportedly moved out of their family home due to the Manchester City manager's latest contract..

The couple's relationship has been on the rocks over the last 18 months, with Spanish podcast Mamarazzis stating that Guardiola hasn't seen his wife in a while. Cristina Serra, who has been married to the City boss since 2014, moved back to Barcelona in 2019 to continue running her fashion brand, Serra Claret.

Since then, the business owner had been travelling between Spain and England to visit her husband as he continued to find success with City. Reports stated that in September 2024, Serra didn't return to England because a promise to move to the United Arab Emirates wasn't kept.

Guardiola's resulting contract extension, keeping him at the Etihad until 2027, appeared to be the last straw for his wife, but the couple indicated they were leaving the door open to reconcile in the future. Now, Antena 3 program Y Ahora Sonsoles hosted Mamarazzis star Lorena Vazquez, and she shed fresh light on the situation.

Vazquez claims that Serra has left the family home in the Pedralbes area to move to another apartment in the Eixample district. Speaking about the property the 52-year-old seemingly bought in October, she said: "It's a modest home, compared to what she could have afforded.

Tennis player banned for Twenty years for match fixing

French tennis player Quentin Folliot has been slapped with a whopping 20-year ban and a fine of £52,146 ($70,000) after being found guilty of match-fixing, as confirmed by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). He is the sixth player to face punishment following an investigation into the scandal.

In addition to the hefty fine, he's also been ordered to pay back over £32,777 ($44,000). These are believed to be "corrupt payments" linked to 27 violations of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP).

The length of his ban means he won't be able to return to the sport until May 2044, and even then, he'll only be allowed back once he's settled his outstanding fines. His provisional ban since May 2024 has been taken into account in determining the duration of his suspension.

During his suspension, he's barred from playing tennis, coaching others, or attending any events organised, sanctioned, or authorised by ITIA members (ATP, ITF, WTA, Tennis Australia, Fédération Française de Tennis, Wimbledon and USTA) or any other national association.

An investigation concluded he was a "central figure in a network of players operating on behalf of a match-fixing syndicate." He's not the only one caught in the crosshairs of this extensive investigation.

Five other players, namely Jaimee Floyd-Angele, Paul Valsecchi, Luc Fomba, Lucas Bouquet and Enzo Rimoli, have also been reprimanded.
