FIFA has begun testing a new generation of football technology designed to enhance the accuracy and speed of decisions relating to ball out-of-play situations and offside calls. The initiative is part of the world football governing body’s broader effort to reduce human error, improve fairness, and support match officials with real-time data during games.
The technology combines advanced sensor systems embedded in the match ball with multiple high-speed tracking cameras positioned around the stadium. When the ball fully crosses the touchline or goal line, the system is able to instantly alert match officials, helping to eliminate doubt in tight situations where decisions are often controversial. This is expected to be particularly useful in fast-paced matches where the naked eye may struggle to keep up with play.
For offside decisions, the new system builds on FIFA’s semi-automated offside technology by using artificial intelligence to track players’ movements and body positions more precisely. It aims to deliver quicker and more consistent decisions, reducing long delays associated with VAR reviews.
FIFA officials say the technology is currently being tested in selected competitions and trial matches, with feedback from referees and technical experts guiding further improvements. If successful, the system could be introduced more widely in future tournaments, reinforcing FIFA’s commitment to using innovation to support the integrity of the game.
